How to Apply for an F-1 Student Visa

The F-1 student visa application process involves several vital steps. Obtaining an F-1 visa approval can be challenging, so we recommend consulting an experienced immigration attorney.

F-1 Visa Application Steps

A knowledgeable immigration lawyer will guide you through each step, increasing your chances of a successful application.

  1. Acceptance by a SEVP-certified school. Applicants must first apply to and be accepted to a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified institution.
  2. Pay the SEVIS fee. Once accepted, you will be registered for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.
  3. Receive Form I-20. Your educational institution will send you your Form I-20 in the mail. Verify that the institution signed it and bring it to your visa interview.
  4. Apply for the F-1 visa at an embassy or consulate. Check the embassy or consulate website for details on the full application process and required documents.
  5. Complete the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application (DS-160). The application requires uploading a photo that follows the photo requirements.
  6. Schedule and attend a visa interview. Schedule an appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate. Our attorneys can prepare you for this critical step.
  7. Pay the visa application fee. This fee is non-refundable.

F-1 Visa Renewal

If an international student’s I-20 is nearing its end date and additional time is needed to complete their program, they must request a program extension. This request is made through the student’s Designated School Official (DSO), who is a school representative authorized to handle F-1 student visa matters.

The DSO may grant the extension request if the student has maintained their status and the delay was caused by a compelling academic or medical reason. Reasons could include a change of major or research topic, or a documented illness.

Once the DSO has granted the request, the student must submit Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status, to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This form, along with a newly completed I-20 indicating the DSO’s recommendation, must be submitted to the USCIS for approval.
